The Worcester Public Library has received 500 Chromebooks as part of the Connected and Online Program to expand digital access for residents. This technology grant to the Worcester Public Library is part of the statewide initiative led by the Massachusetts Broadband Institute.

According to a Patch of Worcester report, the grant award ranks among the largest technology grants ever given to a Massachusetts library. The award supports Worcester's digital equity efforts by addressing uneven access to devices and the internet across neighborhoods.

Officials say the investment is designed to improve residents' access to education, job opportunities, and essential online services for those who lack reliable home technology.

In addition to the library, officials with the Massachusetts Broadband Initiative also allowed eight Worcester-based organizations to receive devices through the initiative, underscoring broader community access efforts.

The Connected and Online Program is part of a statewide effort to ensure that Massachusetts residents have the devices and connectivity needed to participate in today's digital ecosystem fully.

According to its website, the Connected and Online Program aims to distribute more than 32,000 internet-enabled devices, plus assistive technology and supportive equipment, to eligible organizations across Massachusetts.

Funding is provided by the U.S. Treasury Capital Projects Fund (CPF).
