This summer, the MBTA Commuter Rail will offer Free Friday Rides for riders traveling to Boston from New Bedford, Fall River, and nearby communities.
According to a NewBedfordGuide.com report, from June through August, all MBTA Commuter Rail lines serving New Bedford and the South Coast will waive Friday fares, creating a network-wide free-Friday program. This offering includes holidays such as Juneteenth (June 19) and July 3.
In addition to free Fridays, monthly passes issued June through August will be discounted by 50%, potentially saving riders substantial money depending on their zone and route. Weekend flexibility for monthly pass holders will also expand, allowing one companion to ride for $1 each way on Saturdays and Sundays across more zones.
MBTA officials noted that the initiative is expected to ease congestion on Routes 24 and 140, cut emissions, support summer travel demand, and demonstrate the value of South Coast Rail investment for New Bedford residents.
The program aligns with local leaders' goals to provide reliable, affordable transit connections to Boston, benefiting riders near waterfront stations and those making regional connections.
