The MBTA Red Line has unveiled a renovated outbound headhouse at Kendall/MIT Station. This renovation, funded by BXP in partnership with the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority, aims to improve capacity and accessibility at the station.
The renovated outbound entrance opened on Monday, April 20, resulting in the closure of the temporary outbound entrance and exit at 325 Main St.
According to a Progressive Railroading report, the project is funded by Brookline-based Boston Properties (BXP) in coordination with the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority. The renovated headhouse features a new glass enclosure, renovated stairs, an escalator, and an extra glass elevator accessible from the street.
“Kendall/MIT Station remains fully accessible, and the new redundant elevator will be ready for passenger service once the final phase of headhouse renovation is complete, which is anticipated in early June,” MBTA officials announced in a news release.
According to a Moovit news report, the renovation aims to address accessibility and capacity issues at one of the busiest Red Line stations. The Kendall/MIT Station serves an area with substantial commuter, student, and visitor ridership.
MBTA officials noted that the renovation is part of the transit agency's ongoing efforts to modernize aging infrastructure, improve passenger flow at key transit hubs, and enhance accessibility across the system.
