The MBTA has completed a Red Line signal repair project near JFK-UMass more than two weeks ahead of schedule. Regular service resumed on Wednesday, April 8, after weeks of service changes.

“I'm very proud of the hard work of our teams to finish this long-overdue signal work at Columbia Junction, also completing this pre-testing ahead of the schedule that we put in place for ourselves,” said Phil Eng, the MBTA's general manager, who also heads the state's transportation division, in a statement shared with the Dorchester Reporter.

The core work focused on Columbia Junction — the nexus where the Ashmont and Braintree branches connect to the Cabot Yard Maintenance Facility, where the majority of the Red Line fleet is stored and maintained. Upgrades here focused on installing a new digital signaling system to boost service reliability and operational flexibility.

The signal system at Columbia Junction, damaged in a 2019 Red Line derailment, has been restored to full functionality, addressing full signal and switch capabilities.

“Operations will be able to reroute trains as needed quickly, turn trains around more quickly, and recover more quickly after unplanned service changes, ultimately providing a better transit experience for riders,“ the MBTA said in a statement shared with Metro Magazine.

According to the Dorchester Reporter, testing began in mid-February and covered more than 100 track circuits at Columbia Junction. Remaining testing is scheduled for overnight hours to minimize rider impact. Final commissioning work is planned for May, with weekend service suspensions in effect, according to Eng.

This project is part of the MBTA's broader modernization effort to upgrade Red and Orange Line signals, aligning with the MBTA's preparedness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
