Inside a New York factory, the future of the MBTA's Green Line trains is taking shape.
During an exclusive visit to the CAF Factory in Elmira, granted only to NBC10 Boston, MBTA officials showed off the new state-of-the-art Type 10 Green Line trains. According to NBC10's reporting, the newer Green Line trains are larger, feature more digital signage, have wider aisles, and sit lower to the ground to improve accessibility. They also include level boarding capabilities and a dedicated operator cab for safety, promoting safety and fewer distractions.
MBTA General Manager Phil Eng said the project delivers what the public deserves, with taxpayer investment directed toward long-term benefits for riders. He emphasized that rider and operator feedback following a prototype at City Hall Plaza in 2024 was invaluable.
All new trains include the Green Line Train Protection System to help prevent collisions and derailments, Eng told NBC10.
The first four pilot trains will be delivered by the year's end. Riders can expect to see them in service by early 2027, with a full rollout of 102 trains by 2031 at a total cost of $816 million.
“Once we're at production pace, there will be two trains a month coming out of this facility delivering to Boston,” said CAF Vice President of Operations Ed Holzlein in a statement shared with NBC10.
