MBTA officials have announced new summer promotions to encourage more people to take the train.

With celebrations for America's 250th anniversary and World Cup matches taking place in Foxborough, crowds are expected to descend on the state and Boston from across the country and around the world.

To that end, transit officials said that the commuter rail will be free for riders every Friday in June, July, and August. In addition, almost all monthly commuter rail passes during these three months will be sold at half the regular price.

In addition, riders with monthly passes can travel to any zone for free on weekends throughout the summer. Monthly passholders can also bring a traveler with them on most trips for only $1 per day.

“We want to make using public transportation easier and more affordable for people, for our regular commuters, for residents going out to local businesses and restaurants, and for everyone who will be enjoying the exciting special events we have going on this summer,” Gov. Maura Healey said in a statement during a news conference covered by Boston 25 News

“That is why we are discounting commuter rail fares and offering free service on Fridays all summer long, saving people hundreds of dollars. The MBTA has made incredible strides to improve service, particularly on the commuter rail, and we want as many people as possible to choose public transportation for special events and as part of their daily routine,” she continued.

The MBTA, however, clarified that the offerings do not cover the special event trains to Foxboro Station, including those serving World Cup matches at Gillette Stadium. The CapeFlyer is also excluded from the promotions.
