Massachusetts is transitioning from traditional E-ZPass transponders to windshield stickers under the EZDriveMA program. The new stickers will now be rolled out to new E-ZPass applicants and to those who need replacements for their current transponders.

Existing transponders will remain usable during a transition period, but once a windshield sticker is applied, removing the transponder from a vehicle will be mandatory.

MassDOT said it aims to simplify production, installation, and aesthetics by replacing transponders with windshield stickers, a plan announced by Massachusetts Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver, according to a Telegram & Gazette report.

"Easier to manufacture, easier to put on," Gulliver said in a statement shared with WCVB Channel 5. "For customers who want something that's a little bit different look on their car, it's less noticeable."

The Massachusetts E-ZPass website doesn't provide a price for the stickers. To get the current transponder, there's no sign-up fee. Requests for additional transponders also don't carry a charge.

Drivers should also note that, with the use of stickers, they will not be able to use a single transponder to cover multiple household vehicles. Once a sticker is applied to an assigned vehicle's windshield, it cannot be removed.

Those who want to receive the new EZDriveMA stickers can log onto www.mass.gov/ezdrivema and click the button that says, "Open an E-ZPass MA account."
