The MBTA and Keolis announced on Monday, March 16, Friday suspensions of North Station Commuter Rail trains to accelerate signal upgrades outside the station.

The upgraded work schedule extends to the following Fridays and weekends: March 20–22, March 27–29, April 10–12, and April 24–27. Regular weekend service will resume during the Boston Marathon weekend, April 17–19.

According to a NewsCenter 5 WCVB report, work on the project had been underway since January and was scheduled to continue on weekends throughout March and April. Additional Friday work has been added to make up for lost time during recent winter storms and to complete the project on time, an MBTA/Keolis spokesperson said.

"This critical project will modernize the signal system at Tower A, which controls all train movements into and out of North Station," MBTA and Keolis said in a release shared with WCVB. "It also prepares for the replacement of the North Station drawbridges in the coming years."

Line-by-Line Impact

  • On the Newburyport/Rockport Line, local and express shuttle buses will operate between North Station and Swampscott. Local buses will serve Wonderland for a Blue Line connection. On April 11–12 only, bus service will be extended to Beverly Depot instead of Swampscott.
  • On the Haverhill Line, Orange Line service will replace the train service between North Station and Oak Grove.
  • On the Lowell Line, local and express shuttle buses will replace regular train service between North Station and Anderson/Woburn Station.
  • On the Fitchburg Line, Red Line to Green Line service will replace train service between North Station and Porter.
