Big Y will pour $130 million into expansion plans that bring nearly 800 jobs to Massachusetts. Six stores are planned across the state.

New stores opened their doors in Uxbridge and Westborough during 2025. Pembroke and Saugus locations arrive this year, while North Dartmouth and Fairhaven won't see openings until 2027.

"Each store brings with it hundreds of jobs and millions and billions of dollars in economic development," said Big Y President and CEO Michael D'Amour, according to WCVB.

The Saugus building stands out as one of the more intriguing pieces of this expansion puzzle. The unused building will transform into a working grocery store, revitalizing a stretch of the Route 1 corridor that had grown stagnant.

Big Y operates as a family business based in Springfield. The independently owned family business has served shoppers throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut for 90 years.

“Big Y is a great example of what makes Massachusetts special — a homegrown company that started here, grew here and continues to thrive here,” said Governor Maura Healey, according to Progressive Grocer, during a March 10 media event at the future Saugus location.
