The Healey administration has announced a $6.6 million award to 15 Massachusetts communities to fund road and street safety across the state.
According to MassLive, the funding is part of the Fiscal Year 2026 Round 2 grants from the Complete Streets Funding Program, administered by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). The program seeks to partner with communities to develop streets that accommodate all individuals regardless of age or form of transportation.
The Complete Streets awards support pedestrian, cycling, and public transit access, with a focus on tailored projects like new sidewalks, updated signals, and crosswalk improvements. This program traces its origins to 2016, with more than $123 million awarded to 568 projects statewide, including 12 Environmental Justice projects in this round.
Awarded projects include the following:
- Andover: $499,971 will create a new sidewalk on Tewksbury Street to offer access to the MBTA Ballardvale Commuter Rail Station and playground, including ADA-compliant curb ramps.
- Bridgewater: $499,989.60 will improve pedestrian safety at Summer and Plymouth streets with updated signals and crosswalks.
- Malden: $500,000 will support intersection and corridor improvements, including curb ramps, signals, and transit stops.
- Middleborough: $500,000 will fund an 8-foot-wide shared-use path and ADA-compliant elements on Center Street.
- Milford: $479,923.08 will help install crosswalks, curb ramps, and intersection improvements on Central, Pearl, and School streets.
- Somerville: $500,000 will be allocated for sidewalk reconstruction, bike structures, and intersection enhancements in the Gilman Square area.
- Westport: $499,800 will go toward new sidewalks, curb ramps, crosswalks, and signage on Sanford Road.
Additional details about the Complete Streets Funding Program and awarded projects are available on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts website.
In addition to funds awarded through the Complete Street Funding Program, several Massachusetts communities are also the beneficiaries of U.S. Department of Transportation awarded grants totaling $13.5 million. The grants will be distributed to municipalities and public agencies through the Safe Streets and Roads for All program.
According to a Patch of Braintree report, the awarded projects and federal grant dollars are benefiting several communities, including:
- Barnstable County: $476,800 for “Planning and Demonstration Activities in Barnstable County.”
- Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization: $5 million for “Safety Forward: Accelerating Road Safety Innovation in the Boston Region.”
