The MBTA has announced that the Orange Line and four Commuter Rail lines will experience service suspensions on selected weekends in late February and March to accommodate work on signal systems and other upgrades.
Commuter Rail service suspensions will take place on the following dates:
- Feb. 21–22
- Feb. 28–March 1
- March 7–8
- March 21–22
- March 28–29
Orange Line
Service from Back Bay to Forest Hills will be suspended from Feb. 28 to March 8. Free and accessible shuttles will make stops at the affected stations, the MBTA said.
Riders should use the Commuter Rail from Forest Hills to Back Bay, a 10-minute trip, the T said. Those who choose to use shuttles should add extra time to their trip. The MBTA advises travelers from Forest Hills to Downtown Crossing to allow an extra 20 minutes.
Red Line
The MBTA announced that the Red Line will be suspended from Broadway to Ashmont during the weekend of Feb. 21–22 to accommodate “signal upgrade and modernization work.”
Shuttle buses will transport passengers from Broadway to Ashmont, along with regular service from JFK/UMass to Braintree. The fare gates will be in service at Broadway and JFK/UMass, the MBTA notes.
Commuter Rail
The MBTA stated that it will suspend four Commuter Rail lines as part of its North Station Terminal Area Signal Systems Improvement Project. This suspension will affect all Northside Commuter Rail lines, the T said.
- The Fitchburg Line will be suspended from North Station to Porter, the transit agency reported. Fitchburg Line riders can use the Red Line to go from Porter to Park Street, then change to the Green Line to arrive at North Station. Passengers traveling to and from Porter and North Station should allow 20 minutes of extra travel time, according to the MBTA.
- Haverhill Line service will be interrupted between North Station and Oak Grove. The Orange Line will be available at North Station for travelers to access Oak Grove. Passengers should allow 10 extra minutes for travel time, the T said.
- The Lowell Line will be suspended from North Station to Anderson/Woburn, according to the MBTA. Free, accessible shuttle buses will operate from North Station to Anderson/Woburn. An express bus will travel directly between the two stations, the MBTA said. Travelers using the express shuttle should allow an extra 15 minutes for their trip. Those using the local shuttle should add 40 minutes to their ride time.
- The Newburyport/Rockport Line will be inaccessible from North Station to Swampscott. Shuttle buses will run between each station. An express shuttle will operate from Swampscott to North Station, the MBTA noted. Travelers should anticipate 70 minutes for the non-express shuttle and 40 minutes for the express shuttle, the MBTA noted. The final outbound train of the night will serve Salem and Beverly Depot. No train connections will be available at Beverly Depot, the MBTA stated.
