The Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts has launched vasectomy services for men. These services began on Saturday, Feb. 14, in connection with the Valentine's Day holiday.

The nonprofit told WBUR that it decided to offer the surgeries that sterilize male reproductive organs after it saw an increase in requests for them after President Trump's election in 2024.

According to Dr. Luu Ireland, chief medical officer for the family planning and health services organization, the surgeries can be booked after a consultation at any of the organization's four locations across the state. The procedures all take place at the Worcester location and occur once a month.

In Massachusetts, Planned Parenthood said it will be able to schedule 10 to 12 procedures every month. As of Monday, Feb. 16, five people were scheduled for the procedure in March.

The typical cost is approximately $700, and many insurance plans cover the procedure. Discounts or sliding-scale options may be available.

Across New England, Planned Parenthood centers in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine also offer vasectomies.

According to a study published in JAMA, after the Supreme Court ended the law guaranteeing the right to an abortion in the United States, demand has increased for more permanent methods of contraception, including vasectomies. Surgery can reverse vasectomies.
