On Tuesday, Jan. 27, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft surprised the family of fallen Uxbridge police officer Stephen LaPorta with tickets to the Super Bowl.
The 43-year-old husband and father was laid to rest during services in which law enforcement officials from across Massachusetts participated.
“We're sending you there in dad's honor,” Kraft told Shannon and Matthew LaPorta, the wife and son of the late Stephen LaPorta, who died in the line of duty on Jan. 7. According to a Telegram & Gazette report, LaPorta had just exited his police cruiser to help a stranded motorist on icy Route 146 when a tractor-trailer struck him.
In a video shared on the Patriots X account, Shannon and Matthew believed they were visiting Gillette Stadium for a tour. However, Kraft delivered the tickets to them, announcing that they would be attending Super Bowl LX between the Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks in Santa Clara, California, on Sunday, Feb. 8.
"I think that was like the best moment of my life, like today," Shannon said after being presented with the tickets. "I'm truly blessed and grateful for all the outpouring of support in this community and around."
"Go Pats!" Matthew said.
According to an NBC10 Boston report, Uxbridge police have been supporting the LaPorta family following Stephen's death. Officers have organized a charity hockey game and a comedy night, in addition to selling No. 31 buttons and personalized clothes to benefit the family. Officers have also established the LaPorta Family Trust at Savers Bank.
