Maynard might be getting a new look this Super Bowl Sunday, at least in name.
According to the Town of Maynard, local officials are set to vote next week on a proposal to temporarily rename the town “MAYEnard” on February 8, the same day the New England Patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX. The nod is, of course, to Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, who has led the team to a 14-3 season and an AFC Championship title.
The Select Board will take up the proposal during its meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. at Maynard Town Hall, 195 Main Street. If approved, the change would make the tribute official for one day, turning Maynard into a full-blown “MAYEnard” as fans gather to watch the Patriots vie for their seventh championship.
While symbolic, the gesture reflects the pride many in the region feel toward Maye’s breakout season. The 24-year-old quarterback has been a standout since joining the Patriots, earning two Pro Bowl selections and emerging as a finalist for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award. His leadership helped propel the team back to the Super Bowl after several rebuilding seasons.
Town officials say the idea came as a lighthearted way to show local support during Super Bowl week. “It’s meant to bring the community together and celebrate the Patriots’ run,” said the town in its announcement.
If the measure passes, residents and visitors could see banners, signs, and digital displays around town using the new “MAYEnard” name throughout Super Bowl Sunday.
For now, football fans will have to wait until Tuesday to see if Maynard officially flips the script in time for Game Day. But win or lose, one thing’s clear: Patriots fever is alive and well in small-town Massachusetts.
