The Worcester Red Sox are gearing up for an Opening Day unlike any other, with baseball legend Roger Clemens set to throw the ceremonial first pitch as the team celebrates both the 40th anniversary of a historic pitching performance and the club’s fifth anniversary at Polar Park.

The seven-time Cy Young Award winner, famously nicknamed “The Rocket,” will join his former Red Sox batterymate and Worcester native Rich Gedman on Friday, March 27, when the WooSox face the Syracuse Mets. The celebration will honor the pair’s 1986 season, when Clemens struck out 20 batters in a single game — a record-setting feat with Gedman behind the plate. Together, they’ll mark the milestone in front of fans who helped turn Worcester into one of America’s most vibrant new baseball cities since the team’s 2021 arrival.

“It’s poetic to have the greatest ‘human rocket’ of them all at Polar Park in this centennial celebration,” said WooSox President Dr. Charles A. Steinberg, noting that Clemens’ appearance coincides with the 100th anniversary of Worcester-born physicist Robert Goddard’s first liquid-fueled rocket launch — an event that inspired the team’s mascot, Roberto the Rocket.

The Opening Day experience, presented by CITGO, starts with gates opening at 1 p.m. and pregame ceremonies beginning around 3:15 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets starting at $5 at woosox.com or at the Polar Park box office. One lucky fan will even have the chance to escort Clemens to the mound, while others will be able to meet him at Sherwood’s Diner on Summit Street during the game. Postgame UniBank Fireworks, set to music celebrating Boston baseball history, will wrap up the day.

The event marks a full-circle celebration for Clemens, who earned 192 of his 354 career wins with the Red Sox and remains Boston’s all-time strikeout leader with 2,590. His connection to Worcester’s baseball legacy adds a nostalgic flair to what’s become a cornerstone of the city’s growing sports culture.

While the WooSox prepare for their anniversary festivities on the field, Polar Park itself is entering a new phase of fan comfort and design innovation. The team announced the addition of a new canopy over the Hanover Deck in left field — a major enhancement aimed at shielding groups from rain, snow, and the summer sun. The upgrade, made possible through funding from Diamond Baseball Holdings and support from Hanover Insurance Co., aims to make New England’s fickle weather less of a factor for fans.

“The Hanover Deck is our largest area for group outings, and groups have told us they would love to have more shade and the assurance of a roof for their events,” Steinberg said. “Cookouts and picnics will now be shielded from rain, snow, and the summer sun. The deck will also be warmer and more comfortable in New England’s winter and early springtime.”

The organization also plans to complete the Polar Park Patio atop the right field “Worcester Wall” by replacing the existing gravel with decorative pavers — another move inspired by fan feedback. The revamped Triple Decker Garden will add new dining and beverage features later this year, continuing a pattern of fan-driven enhancements.

Since its debut in 2021, Polar Park has evolved rapidly, adding amenities like the WooSox Hall of Fame, Summit Street, new food vendors, and the family-friendly Plymouth Street Playground. The park has garnered national recognition, including “Best Ballpark in Triple A” by USA Today and Ballpark Digest and “Best Venue for an Employee Outing” two years running from the Worcester Business Journal. In December, Baseball America named the WooSox the “Organization of the Year in Triple A” — a first-year eligibility honor that underscores the team’s strong presence in the community.

With their fifth season in Worcester on the horizon, the WooSox are combining nostalgia with innovation. Clemens’ ceremonial pitch will bridge baseball history and hometown pride, while Polar Park’s upgrades ensure that fans will enjoy more comfort and connection for years to come.

As Worcester looks skyward once again — a century after its native son launched the Space Age — “The Rocket” will land at Polar Park, reminding fans that in the Heart of the Commonwealth, baseball and history share the same orbit.
