Providence, Rhode Island, is cementing its place as an integral part of the New England sports scene.

Football fans are drawn to Providence's location and pricing, as visiting NFL teams favor the city's lodging amenities and rates over Boston when games are held at the New England Patriots' home turf, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

T.F. Green International Airport serves as a convenient entry for visiting teams and the Patriots. Strategic marketing has positioned the airport as the official airport of the Patriots.

The NFL connection isn't the only appeal for Providence. Several sporting events throughout this winter are expected to sustain tourism during what is typically a slow season. In fact, the city has become a premier host of regional events that boost tourism and statewide business activity each winter, supported by the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau and a wave of hotel construction.

Winter indoor sports attractions include two cheerleading competitions at the Rhode Island Convention Center that together attract approximately 27,000 attendees and generate $5.5 million in direct spending. These events complement ice rink bookings for a major youth hockey tournament and a figure skating festival.

According to a Providence Journal report, the Rhode Island Sports Commission projects $15.5 million in direct sports-tourism spending for early 2026. More than 18,000 hotel bookings and approximately 78,000 travelers visit Providence and nearby areas from January through March.
