A popular Fenway food hall has announced it will close at the end of January.

Time Out Market Boston will close on Friday, Jan. 23, marking a notable change in the Boston food-hall scene.

On Monday, Jan. 12, The Boston Globe reported that managers informed market vendors that the market would close. Managers cited the inability to fully recover from reduced visitor traffic and higher operating costs since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Time Out's closure will create a vacancy of about 27,000 square feet on the ground floor of 401 Park, a Fenway complex that also houses an REI Co-op store that's also slated to close later this year.

While the market has seen substantial turnover since its opening, it remains completely leased with 15 vendors. They include Cusser's Roast Beef, Ms. Cluck's Deluxe, Anoush'ella, InChu, Union Square Donuts, Gogo Ya, Far Out Ice Cream, and Lulu Green, in addition to others.

According to The Boston Globe, Time Out Market began in Lisbon in 2014 and expanded to Boston in 2019, making it its third U.S. location. When it opened, the market featured a curated mix of high-end and fast-casual dining from the city's restaurant talent, including Tim and Nancy Cushman, Tony Maws, and Michael Schlow.

401 Park, home of Time Out Market, originated as a Sears Roebuck warehouse in the 1920s. It was redeveloped into a mixed-use space by Samuels and Associates and later sold to Alexandria Real Estate Equities in 2021 for $1.5 billion.

Despite Time Out's closing, food halls are continuing to emerge in the Boston region. Eastern Edge is scheduled to open in Kendall Square this month. Area malls, such as CambridgeSide, are reimagining their food courts in response to consumer demand.
