A Massachusetts craft brewery has found itself at the center of a viral sensation thanks to a clever mix of football fandom, pop culture nostalgia and perfect timing.
Stellwagen Beer Company in Marshfield can’t seem to keep its latest creation, Love the Drake, on the shelves. The dry-hopped lager — a nod to both Seinfeld and New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye — sold out within three days of its release, according to reports from CBS News Boston and MassLive.
The 4.6% ABV beer isn’t flashy in flavor. Brewers describe it simply as “a beer that tastes like beer.” But what it lacks in experimental flair, it makes up for in viral appeal. Cans of Love the Drake feature a generic football player in a navy No. 10 jersey — Maye’s number — alongside a logo inspired by Seinfeld. The name itself riffs on the show’s classic “Love the Drake!” episode.
The beer was first launched in late 2024, just as Maye began making waves as the Patriots’ promising young quarterback. According to Stellwagen’s head of sales, Eddie Letsche, the idea for the name came spontaneously but turned out to be a winner. “We wanted something fun that tied into football season,” he told MassLive.
Stellwagen’s creative director, Annika Phillips, told Sports Business Journal she was careful to sidestep any copyright issues by avoiding official team logos or likenesses. Even so, the buzz has been enormous. Fans have traveled from across New England to track down cans, and the brewery has fielded shipping requests from as far away as Florida.
“This is beyond anything we’ve seen before,” Phillips said, noting that demand has outpaced any previous release. Social media has amplified the frenzy, with posts of the can artwork and playful reviews spreading quickly among Patriots fans.
While Stellwagen hasn’t announced the next batch’s release date, the brewery hinted that reorders are coming soon — good news for those who missed out the first time. For now, the small Marshfield team is savoring its viral success, one pint at a time.
With the Patriots in playoff contention and Maye’s star rising, Love the Drake has become more than a beer; it’s a cultural moment that blends humor, hometown pride, and a touch of Boston’s signature zest for sports and craft brewing.
