The MBTA has announced it will suspend commuter rail service to and from North Station on nine weekends from early January through late April to accommodate the upgrade of the station's obsolete signal system and to prepare for the replacement of the North Station drawbridges.
According to the T, the new microprocessor signal system requires less maintenance and reduces system failures and train delays.
Per Keolis, which operates the commuter rail for the MBTA, commuter rail service out of North Station will be suspended on the following weekends:
- Jan. 17-18
- Jan. 24-25
- Jan. 31-Feb. 1
- Feb. 28-March 1
- March 7-8
- March 21-22
- March 28-29
- April 11-12
- April 24-27
Boston.com reported that several operating adjustments will be in effect, including the following:
- The Newburyport/Rockport Line will use local and express shuttles between North Station and Swampscott. Local buses will service Wonderland for a Blue Line connection.
- The Lowell Line will use local and express shuttles between North Station and Anderson/Woburn Station.
- Orange Line service will replace commuter trains between North Station and Oak Grove on the Haverhill Line.
- The Fitchburg Line will use the Red Line and Green Line service between North Station and Porter.
The MBTA reminds riders to budget extra time for traveling via alternative transportation during suspension weekends, including shuttle buses and subway options.
