While performing routine maintenance at a supermarket in Chelmsford, a technician discovered a skimming device and a hidden camera on an ATM in the store's entrance.

According to the Chelmsford Police Department, the device was located at the Hannaford Supermarket at 66 Drum Hill Road around 12:10 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2.

Investigators told NewsCenter 5 that the skimmer could record debit card information while the camera captured the PIN. It's unknown how long the camera and skimmer had been on the ATM.

According to the FBI, which offers guidance on skimming scams on the agency's website, criminals can encode the stolen data onto a blank card and use the information to hack into a victim's bank account.

Authorities urge anyone who recently used the ATM to closely monitor their bank statements for signs of suspicious activity and to change their PINs immediately.

Chelmsford police said the incident serves as a reminder for the public about avoiding becoming victims of ATM skimmers:

  • Inspect ATMs for irregularities. Don't use any card reader if you notice something out of place with the machine.
  • Shield your PIN to prevent cameras from recording your PIN.
  • Use well-lit indoor ATMs to reduce your risk. While these ATMs may still be targeted, they are still less vulnerable to being compromised by thieves.

The investigation in Chelmsford remains active and is ongoing.
