Massachusetts has gained recognition for its private, elite golf offerings, as highlighted in a Golfweek ranking compiled for USA TODAY. The rankings assess states on public courses, private elite venues, and overall golf strength.
The state ranks eighth nationally with a score of 7.82 out of 10, according to a Patriot Ledger report.
Below are some of the top state golf courses recognized by Golfweek:
- The Boston Golf Club in Hingham is highlighted as the sole modern-design course in the state's list, offering a blend of modern play within a traditional setting.
- Eastward Ho! in Chatham is an 18-hole Cape Cod course with ocean views. It's regarded for its family-friendly environment and welcoming culture.
- Essex Country Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea is a historic club dating back to 1893. It now features a Donald Ross-designed 18-hole course and extensive facilities beyond golf.
- Myopia Hunt Club in Hamilton, opened in 1894, is a classic 18-hole course. It has hosted four early U.S. Open tournaments (1898, 1901, 1905, and 1908) and is described as a classic 18-hole course.
- The Country Club in Brookline, founded in 1882, is described as a historic powerhouse in golf courses. Its Main course and Primrose nine led to the club being ranked No. 1 among Golfweek's 2022 private list.
When combining public and private courses, Massachusetts ties with New Jersey and Ohio for 14th place with a score of 7.1 in the overall Golfweek ranking.
