Massachusetts begins 2026 with a wave of new laws taking effect after Gov. Maura Healey's administration signed 185 bills into law last year.
Beginning Thursday, Jan. 8, paid family and medical leave benefits will increase by approximately $60 weekly, from $1,170.64 to $1,230.39.
On Friday, Jan. 9, regulations for social cannabis consumption will take effect, paving the way for cannabis cafes, yoga classes, and festivals under the Cannabis Control Commission's oversight. An NBC10 Boston report noted that the Cannabis Control Commission approved the rules last month.
Additionally, completing a new mandatory boater education course is now required to operate motorized vessels. Deadlines for completing the course are tied to birth year. Those born after Jan. 1, 1989, must obtain certification by April 1, and those born earlier have until April 1, 2028.
Healey said she is looking forward to 2026 and remains focused on building more housing and reducing costs for residents.
