Boston Officials Detail Safety Preparations for 50th Annual First Night Celebration

These safety protocols were discussed during a news conference held on Monday, Dec. 29.
Wu reminded attendees to dress warmly, as temperatures are expected to be frigid on Wednesday, Dec. 31. She also said that no fireworks, drones, or drinking in public spaces is allowed. Wu also urged anyone who sees anything suspicious to report it immediately to the authorities.
Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said his department has a comprehensive security plan in place for First Night Boston. Plain clothes and uniformed officers will be stationed in and around all of the event venues. Additionally, firefighters and EMTs will also be on call throughout the city, officials noted.
According to an NBC10 Boston report, Wu also encouraged people to use public transportation, if possible. The T has announced extended hours for the event. Transportation will remain free after 8 p.m.
This year marks the 50th year for First Night Boston. Activities will include ice sculptures, a parade, a laser and pyrotechnic show, and two sets of fireworks. More than 400,000 members of the public are expected to attend.
Main stage entertainment returns to City Hall Plaza for the third consecutive year, along with daytime programming in Copley Square and other areas around the city. Events associated with First Night Boston are family-friendly and run from 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31, until 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026.
