People across Massachusetts woke up on Monday, Dec. 15, to record-cold conditions. Temperatures were in the single digits across many cities, and wind chills were near or below zero in several locations statewide.
A cold weather advisory was in effect for the Berkshires until 9 a.m. on Monday. The Berkshires reported wind chills as low as 15 below zero.
According to a MassLive report, it was 5 degrees in Pittsfield before sunrise, 9 degrees in Worcester, and 13, 14, and 15 degrees in Springfield, Boston, and Hyannis, respectively.
Daytime highs struggled to get out of the 20s, with temperatures hovering in the mid-20s and wind chills in the negative single digits to teens. Accuweather recorded high temperatures of 25 degrees in Boston, 20 degrees in Worcester, and 24 degrees in Salem on Monday.
The bitter cold isn't expected to last long, however. According to MassLive, forecasters predict a temperature rebound by the middle of this week, with highs in the 40s to near 50 degrees. Forecasters are watching for the potential of a strong storm system developing that could bring heavy rain and stronger wind gusts to the area later in the week.
