Northeastern University is preparing to host its final athletics game at Matthews Arena on Dec. 13. After the game, fans can stake a claim to chairs and bricks from the century-old rink ahead of its demolition.

Commemorative bricks with plaques featuring the Mathews Arena Farewell logo are available for $150 each, stadium seats for $600 each, and a seat mounted on a commemorative base for $1,000. Approximately 1,000 bricks are available and will ship to customers in February 2026.

According to the Remembering Matthews Arena website, 1,000 commemorative bricks are available for purchase. According to Boston.com, one brick labeled “#1” is currently being auctioned and had a bid of $575 as of Monday, Dec. 8. The website called the item a “one-of-one collectible” that is “certain to retain its value as the first ceremonial brick removed from the iconic arena.” Bidding ends on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

Northeastern has owned the facility, once the home of the Boston Celtics and Bruins, since 1979. The arena also hosted many collegiate Boston hockey teams and appearances by political figures and artists such as John F. Kennedy, Bob Dylan, and The Supremes. Originally called Boston Arena, it was renamed the Matthews Arena in 1982 following alumnus George Matthews' philanthropic support for renovations.

This sale isn't the first for Northeastern. In 2021, the university sold commemorative items from Friedman Diamond for $200 to $500. Personalized plaques of the pavilion seatbacks were available for $1,000, according to Boston.com.
