Several Massachusetts towns and cities are enforcing specific snowblower operating hours as part of winter weather regulations for their communities.

  • In Springfield, homeowners may operate snowblowers only between 5 a.m. and midnight during a storm. If individuals choose to ignore this mandate, they could face fines up to $100.
  • In Newton, homeowners are only allowed to use a snow blower from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • In Cambridge, homeowners are prohibited from using “domestic power tools” before 7 a.m. and after 10 p.m.

Statewide, residents must observe quiet hours between 9 p.m until 7 a.m.

State officials are also urging homeowners to take care when operating snowblowers. To clean a clog carefully, individuals should fully shut off the machine before attempting to remove snow clogs or service it. Instead of using their hands to remove clogged snow, homeowners should use a broom handle to minimize the risk of injury.
