17 Massachusetts Hospitals Earn Top Safety Marks; 4 Receive ‘D’ Grades

Several Massachusetts hospitals have been ranked among the safest in the country in a new Leapfrog study, but not all earned high marks.

The health care nonprofit released its fall 2025 Hospital Safety Grades for facilities nationwide, highlighting 54 hospitals in Massachusetts.

Among the hospitals highlighted, 17 received an "A" grade, 16 a "B" grade, 16 a "C" grade, and four a "D" grade. One hospital was listed as "not graded" in a WickedLocal.com report.

The 17 hospitals that received an "A" grade include the following:

  • Anna Jaques Hospital: Newburyport
  • Baystate Franklin Medical Center: Greenfield
  • Baystate Wing Hospital: Palmer
  • Berkshire Medical Center: Pittsfield
  • Boston Medical Center: Boston
  • Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital: Jamaica Plain
  • Brigham and Women's Hospital: Boston
  • Cape Cod Hospital: Hyannis
  • Holyoke Medical Center: Holyoke
  • Massachusetts General Hospital: Boston
  • Mount Auburn Hospital: Cambridge
  • Newton-Wellesley Hospital: Newton
  • Saint Anne's Hospital: Fall River
  • Salem Hospital: Salem
  • Sturdy Memorial Hospital: Attleboro
  • UMass Memorial Health Milford Regional Medical Center: Milford
  • Winchester Hospital: Winchester

The following facilities received a "D" grade, according to Leapfrog:

  • Baystate Medical Center: Springfield
  • Heywood Hospital: Gardner
  • MetroWest Medical Center: Framingham
  • Saint Vincent Hospital: Worcester

According to a WickedLocal.com report, Leapfrog does not grade VA hospitals, critical access hospitals, specialty hospitals, children's hospitals, or outpatient surgery centers.

The Leapfrog Group is a 25-year-old nonprofit that aims to improve hospital safety and quality nationwide. Twice a year, it publishes its Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades that rate U.S. general hospitals on patient safety factors, including infection rates, surgical complications, safety issues, and error prevention.
