If you're cooking a Thanksgiving feast, make sure you have everything you need before Thanksgiving Day. You won't be able to run out to the grocery store for a last-minute ingredient in Massachusetts or Rhode Island. That's because grocery stores cannot legally open on Thanksgiving in these states.

In Massachusetts and Rhode Island, grocery stores are not allowed to open on Thanksgiving, as it is a restricted holiday under the states' "Blue Laws." Stores like the Big Y, Hannaford, Market Basket, Price Rite, Roche Bros., Stop & Shop, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods will all be closed on Thursday, Nov. 27, this year. Liquor stores will also be closed on Thanksgiving.

The so-called "Blue Laws" have origins in Puritan influences and date back to the colonial daysaccording to a WickedLocal.com report. According to Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Thanksgiving and Christmas are two of the restricted holidays for grocery stores.

Certain services, such as gas stations, restaurants, and pharmacies, may operate on Thanksgiving depending on local regulations and the size of the business. Residents and travelers should confirm hours in their communities and towns.

Additionally, small convenience stores with very limited staff may stay open. According to the "Blue Laws," food stores that don't have more than three employees, including the owner, working at one time can stay open on Thanksgiving.

However, note that many shops still close on certain holidays to allow employees to spend time with their families. You'll want to call ahead in advance to confirm before you venture out.
