Massachusetts is keeping alive the sacrifices of service members through a recently launched Massachusetts Veteran Legacy Trail. This initiative is part of the Massachusetts 250th Anniversary (MA250) commemoration.
The Massachusetts Veteran Legacy Trail honors the service of veterans and military service members from the Revolutionary War to the present day. Through this first-of-its-kind project, organizers have cataloged more than 1,200 war memorials across Massachusetts.
“With the Veteran Legacy Trail, we're connecting Massachusetts residents and visitors alike with the sacrifices of generations who served and ensuring their legacy is part of how we commemorate our nation's 250th anniversary,” said Gov. Maura Healey in a statement shared with the Sentinel & Enterprise.
The project features an interactive website with a searchable map of more than 1,200 war memorials and a companion brochure highlighting top memorials in each of the Commonwealth's six regions. Users can navigate the platform by searching for regions, war eras, or communities to uncover local stories of service and sacrifice.
The Legacy Trail profiles several area war memorials, covering the Twin Cities area to the Merrimack Valley. Representative memorials span various communities in Massachusetts, including Fitchburg, Leominster (and its Memorial Circle), Lunenburg, Lowell, Tyngsboro, Chelmsford, and Pepperell.
Visit the Massachusetts Veteran Legacy Trail website to explore 250 years of Massachusetts veteran history in your city or town.
