Boston has done it again, claiming the top spot on WalletHub’s 2025 list of Best Sports Cities in America. The city ranked first overall and first among large metropolitan areas in a study that compared more than 390 cities across the country. The rankings factored in team performance, ticket prices, fan engagement, and the strength of local sports culture.
The recognition comes as no surprise to those who call Boston home, where sports pulse through every neighborhood from Fenway Park’s Green Monster to the parquet floor of TD Garden. WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said Boston earned the number-one ranking because of its wide appreciation for different sports, professional presence, and famous venues. “Boston tops the list of the best sports cities this year because of its strong appreciation for all types of sports, numerous professional teams, and proximity to iconic stadiums and arenas,” he said. “It ranks second for basketball and maintains impressive standings in baseball, football, and soccer.”
The city’s sports identity runs deep, built on both triumph and heartbreak that have defined its teams for decades. Few cities can match the passion of Boston’s fandom. Whether cheering the Celtics, Bruins, Patriots, Red Sox, or Revolution, locals have a team for every season and a story that ties generations together.
Alfred C. Yen, a professor at Boston College Law School, said what makes Boston special is the connection between the city, its teams, and the people who root for them. “A good sports city starts with its fans,” Yen said. “When a personal relationship develops between the city, the fans, and the teams, the support becomes almost like family.”
That bond stretches far beyond city limits. Robert Derda of Point Park University said Boston’s teams reflect its cultural identity and history, uniting fans well beyond New England. For newcomers or visitors, the region’s college and amateur sports scene adds to its appeal, from Boston College hockey to the Boston Marathon.
WalletHub’s report highlighted Boston’s strong performance across multiple sports. The city placed second nationally for basketball, fifth for baseball, fourth for football, and earned high marks in soccer thanks to the continued presence of the New England Revolution in Major League Soccer. Experts also emphasized that sports in Boston remain accessible, with affordable and community-based options across the region.

With another title to celebrate, Boston’s place among the nation’s greatest sports cities is once again secure—not only for its teams’ championships, but for the fans who make the city’s sports culture second to none.
