On Monday, Oct. 27, the Merrimack Valley Good Scout Awards Luncheon took place at Lenzi's Catering and Function Hall in Dracut, honoring several community leaders. U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan, Maria Gonzalez Moeller of The Community Group, and Joe Hungler of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell were recognized for demonstrating the "Spirit of Scouting" through their service and integrity. The awards were presented by Scouting America's Spirit of Adventure Council.
During the luncheon, U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan explained the deep roots of the scouting spirit in the community. She spoke about core values such as honesty, kindness, respect, and the importance of giving back amid challenging times.
Maria Gonzalez Moeller expressed humility upon receiving her award. She highlighted her leadership at The Community Group and the successful growth of a Cub Scout pack in Lawrence from 26 to 60 members since the pandemic.
Joe Hungler, a former Cub Scout and current Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell executive director, described how scouting and the club create safe environments for youth to develop skills, confidence, and leadership. The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell, which has been in operation since 1900, continues its mission of supporting positive youth development in the community.
According to a report by The (Lowell) Sun, the Spirit of Adventure Council has revitalized scouting in the Merrimack Valley, promoting outdoor activities and diversity, including the inclusion of girls in the program since 2019.
