A new documentary exploring the intricacies of Cape Cod's fishing industry has premiered.
Directed by Geoff Bassett and Kim Roderiques, The Hand that Holds the Line aims to deepen viewers' understanding of Cape Cod's fishing industry by showcasing the lives of nearly 25 fishermen from Yarmouth to Provincetown. The film details the dedication, community bonds, and personal sacrifices these individuals make.
The documentary's premiere took place at the Chatham Orpheum on Oct. 16, with additional sold-out screenings scheduled for November. Another has been scheduled for Dec. 4 at 6:30 p.m.
Filmmaker Roderiques, a resident, emphasizes that this documentary offers a comprehensive view of the fishing community, moving beyond previous films that focused on specific aspects, to portray the traditions, culture, and resilience of a multigenerational community.
“Why do they do what they do? This is the most dangerous profession in the world, and they are in my backyard,” she said in a statement shared with The Cape Cod Chronicle. “I want to bring people along on this journey of discovery.”
Roderiques approached the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen's Alliance about funding the film. John Pappalardo, chief executive officer of Alliance, pledged to offer support, recognizing the importance of preserving the stories associated with the fishermen.
The Cape Cod Chronicle profiles one of the film's personalities, Captain Keith Rose, and his boat, the Kimberly Ann.
“Keith's boat has a lot of personality,” Bassett said. “Fishing with him was a lot of fun. He has a strong community around him.”
Throughout the film, viewers witness the personal sacrifices and dangerous conditions that fishermen face, including unpredictable weather and life-threatening incidents.
