A Boston restaurant has earned a new accolade as the most famous dining establishment in Massachusetts.

The international foodie website Love Food crowned The Union Oyster House the most famous restaurant in the Bay State.

Here's what Love Food editors had to say about this beloved Boston business:

"Opened in 1826, Union Oyster House is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the United States. Over the course of its history, it's counted JFK, American statesman Daniel Webster, and even Louis Philippe, king of France, among its regulars (the king lived above the restaurant during his exile in the late 18th century). As its name suggests, it specializes in seafood, and its clam chowder is rightly famous."

The Union Oyster House is located on the Freedom Trail, near Faneuil Hall, at 41 Union St. The restaurant was designated a National Historic Landmark for its long-standing service as a restaurant and as the oldest standing brick building in Boston's Georgian architectural style.

Over the centuries, The Union Oyster House has hosted countless famous figures, including the following:

  • Larry Bird
  • Billy Crystal
  • Ted Koppel
  • Paul Newman
  • Wayne Newton
  • Ozzie Osbourne
  • Al Pacino
  • Luciano Pavarotti
  • Dan Rather
  • Robert Redford
  • Sammy Sosa
  • Steven Spielberg
  • Meryl Streep
  • Robin Williams

The Union Oyster House has also received numerous recognitions from several renowned food and wine sources, including:

  • 2024: North America's Best Landmark Restaurant for the World Culinary Awards
  • 2023: Top 50 Most Legendary Restaurants in the World by Taste Atlas
  • 2019: The Oldest Restaurants in the World by Condé Nast Traveler

If you dine at the Union Oyster House, be sure to sample some of the customers' favorite dishes from the menu, including the broiled sea scallops, the lobster pot, broiled Boston scrod, and tender, sweet clams.
