Joseph Byron, the executive director of Honor Flight New England, dedicates his time to honoring senior veterans. The organization arranges free, one-day trips for veterans ages 30 to 103 to visit their memorials in Washington, D.C.
Byron explained to News 9 WMUR that these visits permit veterans to relive wartime memories and share stories with others who understand their experiences. "It's the only day that they will ever have the opportunity to talk about with the ones who truly understand," he said.
Honor Flight New England was inspired by a World War II POW who shared his story of military service, leading to the first flight of its type 16 years ago. Today, the organization has flown approximately 1,500 veterans across 69 trips. This month, Honor Flight New England will make history with its 70th flight, a milestone that underscores the ongoing commitment to honoring veterans.
"What they don't expect is the handshakes and the hugs, and to know that we've given them a day that they will never forget," Byron said. "There aren't enough thank yous that I can express to any of them for what they've done for us."
For many veterans, these trips serve as healing opportunities and a chance to receive the welcome home they never received years ago.
Byron encourages all eligible veterans to take advantage of this opportunity. Learn more by visiting the Honor Flight New England's website.
