The TJ Maxx store on Newbury Street in Boston's Back Bay is set to shutter its doors by Jan. 3, 2026, according to CBS News Boston.
The retail space at 360 Newbury St. comprises three floors, totaling 45,000 square feet of shopping space, according to Boston Magazine. This store first opened in 2016, replacing a Best Buy storefront that had closed in 2012.
In a notice filed with the state on Monday, Sept. 22, the company said it would lay off 117 employees, effective Jan. 5, 2026. A spokesperson for TJX, the parent company of TJ Maxx, told the Boston Globe on Friday, Sept. 26, that these workers were all employed at the Newbury Street store, located next to the Hynes Convention Center MBTA station entrance.
The spokesperson added that TJX will try to help the affected workers find employment at nearby locations.
“We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies, and our decision to close this store reflects that thinking,” said a spokesperson for the company in a statement to CBS News Boston. “We are grateful for the loyalty of our Newbury Street TJ Maxx customers and invite them to visit our nearby stores to continue to find great values.”
TJ Maxx also operates locations in Downtown Crossing and Dorchester, and another nearby in Brookline.
The company declined to provide further comment on the Newbury Street store closure beyond its prepared statement.
