A new 30-acre waterfront space in Lynn opened to the public on Tuesday, Sept. 23, providing residents with public shoreline access for the first time in generations.
Lynn Harbor Park is the culmination of a decades-long effort to remediate land contamination from previous industrial use, including a landfill and manufactured gas plant.
A significant environmental cleanup took place at the site to ensure the land was cleaned and stabilized, transforming it into a safe recreational area for the community.
The park, which features basketball courts, pickleball courts, and a walking path, is the result of a public-private partnership effort. Bob Delhome, the founder and CEO of Charter, partnered with the city of Lynn on the project.
Local officials, including Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson and Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll, emphasized the importance of restoring the waterfront for community use and environmental safety.
"For too long, this city was entirely cut off from our waterfront," said Nicholson in a statement shared with NewsCenter 5. "This park is providing dedicated open space and public access to the water."
"I live on the North Shore, and so many of us have seen this site right along the water be used for heavy industrial uses and things that didn't really relate to the water," Driscoll said in her remarks at the park's dedication. "This is a gift to the next generation of individuals who will enjoy this and families who will recreate here."
