The recently completed Charlestown Bridge now has an official name. The structure has been renamed the William Felton “Bill” Russell Bridge, honoring the legendary Boston Celtics player and his profound impact on the city of Boston.
In an October 2024 article, the Boston Globe noted that the bridge's renaming concludes a longstanding debate over the bridge's name. Questions surrounded whether the span should be known as the “Charlestown Bridge” or the “North End Bridge,” the name traditionally used by Charlestown residents.
Writing for the Boston Globe, Russell's daughter, Karen Kenyatta Russell, said that the recognition symbolizes Russell's ability relationship with Boston, including his ability to unite people through athletic achievements and advocate for fairness.
“Bill Russell demanded fairness and respect, not only for himself but for others who were marginalized,” she wrote. “In doing so, he held a mirror up to the city he brought so much glory to, urging it to live up to its ideals.”
Russell led the Celtics to 11 NBA championships between 1956 and 1969 — eight straight seasons, first as a player and then as a player-coach.
Karen Kenyatta Russell sees the bridge as a metaphor that emphasizes connection and unity, much in the same way her dad championed fairness, justice, love, and respect among all Bostonians.
“The William Felton 'Bill' Russell Bridge will stand not only as a testament to a singular athlete, but also a symbol of what this city has been,” she concluded, “and a reminder of what teammates working together have the power to become.”
