Cruiser, a police dog, was recently celebrated for his role in a successful rescue mission when he quickly located a missing 78-year-old dementia patient on Thursday, Sept. 18.

According to a CBS News Boston report, the search began when the town of Avon needed help locating a man who wandered away from his home, said Wrentham Police Chief Bill McGrath.

"Though many were searching for the gentleman, Cruiser cruised right to his location, tracking and locating him in the woods behind a school!" McGrath told CBS News Boston.

Following the rescue, Cruiser was rewarded with a McDonald's Happy Meal by his handler, Sgt. Dan Morris.

"He's happy he did his job and happier still that Sgt. Morris rewarded him with a trip to McDonald's for a Happy Meal celebration dinner!" McGrath said. "Just look at that big, shameless smile!"

According to the CBS News Boston report, Cruiser joined the Wrentham Police Department as a puppy in 2020 through a grant from the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office. Walpole's Golden Opportunities for Independence, an organization that breeds, raises, and trains English-style Golden Retrievers to become service dogs, provided Cruiser's training.

Last week's rescue isn't the first time that Cruiser, whom students at Wrentham Elementary School helped to name, has located missing individuals. In March, he found two runaway children in the woods, police said, and rescued a missing older adult woman in Foxboro last summer.
