A significant closure of Runway 9-27 at Boston Logan International Airport could cause flight delays over the next two months. The runway closure began on Sept. 2 and is expected to last for 75 days
The announcement by Massport in a news release noted that the closure will impact the number of planes that can land and take off at Boston Logan. “This could cause delays, especially if there are other impacts due to the weather or diversions, among other situations,” the release stated.
By the evening of Thursday, Sept. 18, 33% of the day's flights out of Logan Airport had been delayed, according to a flight-tracking website.
MassLive reported that the ongoing runway closure is the first of two 75-day closures that airport officials have planned to allow for the installation of a “vital” new safety system intended to stop planes that have overshot the runway. The second closure will begin at some point after July 1, 2026.
“Due to the geography around the airport, this system is extremely important and is a FAA-approved method for achieving safety standards,” Massport noted in its release. “This system is used at airports around the world and has prevented innumerable serious accidents.”
The system is already in use on two other runways at Logan, Massport said.
