Come summer 2026, travelers can avoid the crowded security lines at Logan Airport. A new off-site TSA screening center in Framingham will make things faster for people heading to Boston's busy terminals.

At the location next to the Logan Express stop, workers will screen 15–30 passengers per hour. After getting cleared, travelers will take special buses for a 22-mile trip directly to their terminals, avoiding airport congestion.

"Allowing our residents to complete check-in and security here would be a valuable advantage for our community," said Framingham Mayor Charles Sisitsky to WGBH News.

The TSA needs to approve the plan first. The service will operate five hours each day and requires booking ahead at regular Logan Express prices.

With 43.5 million people moving through Logan in 2024, this trial aims to reduce terminal crowds. Special compartments under the secure buses will hold both checked bags and carry-ons.

Speaking to CBS Boston, Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis raised concerns about possible bag tampering during the ride.

Success stories from other U.S. airports support this idea. Philadelphia's airport uses a similar system with nearby regional centers. Brussels Airport led the way in 1958 with the world's first off-site screening.

Workers have begun expanding the Framingham garage to add more parking if the trial works out. Meanwhile, Braintree officials are hoping to get their own screening facility.

While Massport CEO Rich Davey thinks they'll lose money at first, he wants to see how many people use it. Board member John Nucci backs quick growth if travelers like the service.

This new approach to airport access matches successful systems in London, Hong Kong, and Vienna, showing that remote screening can work worldwide.
