Three flight crews near Boston's Logan Airport reported being illuminated by green laser strikes during flights on Monday evening, Sept. 15, prompting a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigation.
According to an NBC10 Boston report, FAA officials confirmed that they received the information from the crews on United Airlines Flight 2356, Southwest Airlines Flight 559, and Republic Airways Flight 4580. No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.
Authorities emphasize that striking an aircraft with laser light can temporarily blind pilots or cause severe eye injuries. The FAA reported more than 12,800 incidents occurred last year. This year, 5,913 laser incidents have been reported so far, according to a CNN report.
It is a federal crime to commit this act. According to NewsCenter 5, violators face criminal penalties, with fines up to $250,000 and up to five years in prison, in addition to local or state penalties. The FAA can also issue fines.
The FAA is currently working with local law enforcement agencies to investigate the laser incidents. It is urging witnesses to report laser strikes immediately to help prevent future incidents from occurring.
