Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo and the City of Salem have announced several planned and anticipated road closures for October in Salem, including parking lot closures and traffic impacts from planned special events.
Salem Police have noted that they will close roadways at any point for public safety reasons. To ensure public safety, some of the closures in 2025 will be more secure with the use of harder barricades.
In anticipation of the significant crowds who will descend upon the city in October, the City is encouraging visitors not to drive into downtown Salem, especially on weekends. Traffic will be heavy, and parking will be severely limited.
Satellite parking lots and free shuttles will be available. Additionally, visitors can take the Salem ferry or ride the Commuter Rail, which will take about 30 minutes from North Station in Boston or about five minutes from the downtown Beverly station.
Road closures are planned downtown for Friday, Oct. 31, starting no later than noon. Depending on crowd size and public safety, the road closures may be earlier. Closures will also be made throughout the month of October. On its website, the City of Salem has posted a detailed schedule of estimated road closures and time frames during the community's Haunted Happenings events.
For real-time traffic and road closure notices, members of the public can download the My Salem MA app or the Destination Salem app for mobile devices and enable notifications.
Take note of the following special events that will result in street closures in Salem:
- Mayor's Night Out: Sept. 26
- Haunted Happenings Grand Opening Parade: Oct. 2
- Witch City 5K: Oct. 4
- Devil's Chase: Oct. 18
