Thirty-one Newport-area nonprofits have been named beneficiaries of the 14th annual Citizens Pell Bridge Run. During this event, thousands of participants will cross the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge at sunrise on Oct. 19.

This 4-mile run and walk from Jamestown to Newport is the only day each year that pedestrians are allowed on the bridge. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event will be given to selected organizations through the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Foundation.

Since it began, the event has raised more than $1 million in charitable giving funds, according to event organizers.

“The Citizens Pell Bridge Run is about more than just the miles we cover. It's about giving back to our community and supporting the organizations that make Rhode Island stronger,” said Matt Gray, president of Gray Matter Marketing, which produces the event, in a statement shared with What's Up Newport.

The race will begin at 7:15 a.m. Participants will be shuttled to Jamestown beginning at 5:30 a.m. Runners and walkers will be organized into "waves" by pace. They'll end the course at the Newport Visitor Center on America's Cup Avenue.

Registration is open on the Pell Bridge Run's website.
