Boston Police have put out a call for help from the public to help them identify shoplifters who have stolen nearly $18,000 worth of merchandise from the Sunglass Hut at Faneuil Hall. The thefts occurred over a period of time during the summer.

According to a police statement, since June, seven reported shoplifting incidents have taken place at the Sunglass Hut at 7 Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Police said all the thefts appear to involve the same unidentified suspects. Additionally, police noted that all the thefts occurred on Tuesday and Friday afternoons.

A press release stated that the thefts took place between June 7 and Aug. 25. Boston.com reported that an eighth incident occurred on Friday, Aug. 29, but police officers made an arrest shortly after that theft occurred.

Boston police shared security camera photos of six of the seven incidents that took place in June, July, and August. Collectively, more than 30 pairs of glasses have been removed from the Sunglass Hut, police said.

Ross Lovern, a spokesperson for J. Safra Real Estate, which owns the marketplace, said in a statement to the Boston Globe that the market's management is aware of the thefts.

“We are working closely with [police] and have met with Sunglass Hut to provide suggestions on how they may better mitigate the risk of theft going forward,” said Lovern.

Lovern further noted that while the marketplace has 24/7 security in common areas of the building, individual tenants like the Sunglass Hut are responsible for providing security “within their place of business,” he said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the thefts to contact the department's detectives assigned to downtown Boston, referred to as District A-1.

Sunglass Hut and its parent company EssilorLuxottica did not respond to requests from the Globe for comment.
